Lev Summation of the laws of bodily discharge. When they defile my tabernacle : None of these discharges made a man or a woman sinful , only ceremonially unclean. This did promote hygiene in ancient Israel, yet discharges of semen and menstruation were so regarded, not because there was anything inherently wrong with them, but because the two are connected with symbols of life and redemption, blood and seed. My tabernacle that is among them : This made an obvious separation between sex and the worship of God.
To the modern world this seems normal, but in the ancient world it was common to worship the gods by having sex with temple prostitutes. God did not want this association in His worship. It is important for us to regard these laws of cleanliness in a New Testament perspective. In Mark Jesus criticized the Pharisees for their over-emphasis on ceremonial cleanliness and their lack of regard for internal cleanliness.
These laws were meant to have both hygienic reasons and spiritual applications; they were never intended as the way to be right with God. In Acts 15 , the early Christian community properly discerned the work and will of God in the New Covenant: that under the New Covenant, the believer was not bound to these laws of ritual purity.
One could be a follower of Jesus without the ritual conformity to the Mosaic Law. Yet we need to remember that spiritual cleanliness in worship is important today. We also remember that Jesus is the One who makes us clean and fit for fellowship: You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you John As we receive from the Word of God, we are being cleansed. Our cleanliness is complete as we abide in Jesus: 1 John - But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Thus a woman suffering from any bloody discharge, whether it be the puerperal discharge Leviticus , menstruation Leviticus , or some other malady Leviticus , is presumed to be losing life. Bleeding may eventually lead to death.
So the discharging woman is regarded as unclean in that she evidently does not enjoy perfect life: indeed unchecked her condition could end in her death. Anything connected with sexual function was part of the physical world; it was categorized as common, not holy.
Sex could never be brought into the sanctuary, for unlike the Canaanite view, sexual activity was not a way to enhance spirituality or commune with God. Sin is wrong done to God, but ritual uncleanness was a condition that, while related to sin, was not itself sinful.
Sin separated the person further from God than uncleanness did. These unclean conditions did not result in the sinfulness of the Israelite but in his or her disqualification from public worship in the nation.
Matthew When He came He announced the end of their authority because God would open the church to Jews and Gentiles equally. Plug in, Turn on and Be En light ened! Not Yet a Member? Click to Sign Up Now! Search Tools. Help us double that pledge and support pastors in the heart of Africa.
