When is icing waved off in hockey

Below is an image explaining the difference between an icing infraction and a legal play with the puck. There are several exceptions to consider if the icing will be called off by the referee. The NHL and many other professional hockey leagues have adopted the hybrid icing rule.

That is, if a player from the violating team skates by the face-off dot before any of the opposing players aside from the goalie. If the puck crosses the goal line and enters the net, the play is determined to be a goal. This is often the case when the opposing team pulled their goalie and the puck has a clear path to the back of the net.

If the puck makes contact with the goalie at any time while the play is still alive, the referee will wave off the infraction. Moreover, if the opposing goaltender shows any intent on playing the puck, the referee will call off the icing. In some cases, the referee will wave off the icing if they feel the opposing player could have reached the puck before it crossed the goal line.

This is usually the case when the puck is travelling slowly passed the goal line and the player is showing little effort to recover the puck quick enough. If the defensive team is on the penalty kill and clears the puck down the ice past center line , icing will not be called. I go more into depth about the penalty kill or, conversely, the power play, in my blog post here.

There are 3 known types or variations of icing:. As described earlier, hybrid icing is the current variation adopted by the NHL and other pro sports leagues. Once the puck is iced, the play will be whistled as an infraction should the opposing team player skates by their defensive red dot first.

The opposing team with more players on the ice, the team on a power play are however still bound by the icing rule. In this situation icing the puck is usually a good move as a way to get the back away from your net as fast as possible -- as you have fewer players available to protect it. When the referee blows the whistle due to an icing call, the other team get penalized by having a face-off in their own side of the rink.

This is a minor penalty in the grand scheme of things, but its risky territory as the puck is now close to the goal and the opposing team have a fighting chance of scoring a goal -- if they win the face-off.

Touch icing occurs when a player on the opposing team must touch the puck to cause the referee to call icing. The officials needed a way to stop players from doing this. So they made a rule where you are not allowed to pass the puck to the far side of the rink, pass the red goal line from your side of the center ice line known as the Red Line.

When icing is called by the referee the offending team is penalized. The do not get a penalty as this is a lesser evil. The sanction imposed is that the offending team has a faceoff in their own end, near their goalie. This can lead to a dangerous situation if the other team happens to win this faceoff the may get a great scoring chance.

The icing hockey rules have been modified somewhat a few years ago. Team always look for loopholes in the rules and what they used to do was whenever a few players got tired they would ice the puck this would be the verb for icing so that they could go to the bench and have another player take their spot.

The new rule now states that if a team ices the puck they do not have the ability to swap out any players. In some Junior leagues such as the WHL , the offending team is permitted to substitute players after an icing only if the puck was shot from the neutral zone between the defensive blue line and the red line.

If the violation occurs in the defensive zone, substitution is prohibited. The rear linesman signals icing by raising his non-whistle hand. In the WHL, a potential defensive-zone icing is indicated by also extending the whistle arm in the direction of the icing call. When the puck has crossed the goal line and in North American professional hockey, a non-offending player has touched the puck the rear official signals icing by folding his arms in front of his chest.
